The Greatest Game of Thrones Scenes

It's officially a year since the final season of Game of Thrones aired on our screens. I thought this was the perfect time to have a little look back at the series as a whole. No matter what you thought of the final season I think we can all agree that Game of Thrones was a TV phenomenon. I mean can you even think of a show that created the amount of hype and obsession that Game of Thrones did? The show is made up of great characters and great moments, so I thought I would take a little look at some of those moments. I hope you enjoy my list of the greatest Game of Thrones scenes.

King Robert Arrives at Winterfell. (S1.E1)

Although not the first scene of the show, the arrival of Robert Baratheon and the Lannister's at Winterfell is a standout moment that introduces us to the politics of Westeros. This scene is where it all starts and is even recreated when Daenerys arrives at Winterfell in season 8. 

Mother of Dragons (S1.E10)

The Birth of Daenerys' dragons is possibly the best moment of season 1. This scene made the impossible possible, dragons were meant to have died out and yet here this ousted Queen is with three baby dragons. This is the first time we see people bow to Dany and it's a Goosebumps moment.

The Red Wedding (S3.E9) 

One of the most heart breaking and unexpected scenes in Game of Thrones history. I actually find the red wedding incredibly hard to watch but it is imperative to the story and highlights the ruthlessness of the Lannister's and their allies.

Mhysa (S3.E10)

Daenerys gets her second season finale moment with the Mhysa scene. All season we've watched Dany really take control and this moment makes it all worth it. I love this scene because we get to see the results of her caring nature and the happiness of those she's freed. The overhead shot is also stunning.

Tyrion's Trial Speech (S4.E6) 

What a moment Tyrion's speech is. I mean this scene is the very embodiment of a mic drop. Everything about this scene from the dialogue to the acting is incredible. This scene is not an epic battle or a power play moment or even a shock death it is pure emotion and that's why it's one of the best Game of Thrones scenes. 

Battle of Castle Black (S4.E9) 

The Battle of Castle Black is a turning point in Jon's journey, he comes face to face with the very people he befriended and the woman he fell in love with. It's great to see Jon in a commanding role for the first time. The whole battle is shot impressively and fully immerses us in the action. 

Hardhome (S5.E8)

The events at Hardhome are some of the best moments in Game of Thrones history. The way the White Walkers appear on the cliff like the four horsemen is a powerful image. Jon's fight with a White Walker is one of the best one on one combats in the show especially when Jon manages to kill it. This scene really showed off what the White Walkers could do and the rising of the dead at the end - actual chills. 

A Dance With Dragons (S5.E9)

After years of waiting we finally get the moment we'd all been waiting for: Daenerys rides a dragon and what a moment it is. The second Drogon appears the whole tone changes and we get to see him protect his mother properly for the first time. The moment Dany walks to Drogon is brilliant, and when she disappears on his back I was overjoyed.

Sansa and Jon reunite (S6.E4)

Ever since the Stark children went their separate ways we've waited for a reunion. Never did we expect Sansa and Jon to be the first to reunite, but what an emotional moment it is. You cannot help but feel happy when things work out for the Starks and Sansa turning up gave Jon a purpose and Sansa the family she needed.  

Hold the Door ( S6.E5) 

Hold the Door is certainly a contender for one of the saddest Game of Thrones moments. We lose multiple characters including Hodor. I actually find this scene so difficult to watch because it is so heart breaking. But this is Game of Thrones and it's most shocking moments are often the best. 

Daenerys Beats the Masters (S6.E9) 

We finally get to see all three dragons in action and it does not disappoint! I love everything about this scene from Dany destroying the ships to Greyworm killing the masters. This scene gives us a real idea of what Dany and her dragons could do in all out war and it actually makes me feel disappointed that we never really got that.  

Battle of the Bastards (S6.E9) 

Everything about this battle is griping from Sansa telling Lord Bolton he will die, to Jon facing down a whole army by himself. This Battle is the pinnacle of Game of Thrones' battles and every moment has us on the edge of our seats. This battle is shot in a way that uses fantastic camerawork and editing to make us feel like we are both part of the battle and watching from above. 

Blowing up the Sept (S6.E10) 

Cersei at her very best. This scene is stunning, from the music to the visuals. The blowing up if the Sept was so unexpected and so perfect that it stands out as a clear contender for best ever Game of Thrones scene. After seeing Cersei be beaten down all season this scene shows us just how evil and powerful she can be. And in true Game of Thrones fashion we lose a lot of characters in one moment.

Tower of Joy/King in the North (S6.E10) 

The transition between the Tower of Joy scene and the King in the North scene is not only fantastic it is also monumental. We finally know who Jon is, although we would have to wait to know if he was a legitimate Targaryen it was great to finally understand Jon's heritage. It was also great to see Jon crowned King.

Daenerys Arrives at Dragonstone (S7.E1) 

What a powerful scene. Dany is finally back home and this scene gives me chills from the moment we see the dragons flying over Dragonstone. What's interesting about this scene is there is only one line of dialogue, yet we are hooked for the whole 7 minutes. I cannot tell you how much I wanted Dany to travel back to Westeros so this scene felt perfect to me. 

Train Loot Attack (S7.E4) 

From the moment Jaime says 'We can hold them off' and we hear Drogon I knew we were in for a fantastic Game of Thrones moment. Drogon steels the show and after all this time we finally get to see what he can do and he does not disappoint. The shear display of power in this scene is sensational but we are also shown the devastation caused by dragon fire. It's really a great scene - take note of the moment of stillness as Drogon flies over the water. 

Daenerys Rides North to save Jon (S7.E6) 

This scene goes from being one of the most euphoric to one of the saddest. The moment Dany and the dragons arrived I cheered. This is the only time we get to see all three dragons in action in Westeros and for a brief moment it is glorious. We get to see Dany and the dragons fulfil their purpose, but that happiness is quickly destroyed when the Night King kills Viserion and Jon sacrifices himself to save everyone including Drogon and Rhaegal. For a brief moment I really believed that together Jon and Dany where the Prince/princess that was promised (then season 8 happened). 

The Dragon Pit (S7.E7) 

The long awaited meeting between Cersei, Jon and Daenerys does not disappoint. From Dany's late arrival on Drogon, to Jon's white walker explanation, to the reunions and Cersei's dramatic exits and entrances. It was a great scene that relied on words rather than action and I loved it.

Arya and Sansa Kill Lord Baelish (S7.E7)

Talk about unexpected! This scene came out of nowhere, it really looked like Sansa was going to put her own sister on trial. Seeing the Starks team up to destroy a common enemy was fantastic. We had been waiting for Lord Baelish to meet his end for seasons and he went out in fantastic fashion.   

The Battle of Winterfell/Arya Kills the Night King (S8.E3) 

Looking back on this battle I see it's faults, but at the time I was fully invested in this episode. There are some great moments such as Melisandre lighting the swords and then the trench, the dragons in the first half of the battle are fantastic and I jumped with relief when Arya killed the Night King. However the one thing I always felt needed to be in this episode was a Jon/Night King showdown. 

So, there you have it, my list of 20 greatest Game of Thrones moments. It was incredibly hard to narrow down 8 seasons to just 20 scenes are there are so many great moments in Game of Thrones history.
