Dune: Part Two Review

Chaotic review incoming! Wow, it’s been a WHILE since I reviewed a movie, but I’ve come out of hibernation to review the much anticipated Dune: Part Two. My initial impression of Dune: Part One was: ‘for a movie that is mainly standing around, it’s a masterpiece.’ Despite my lack of experience with the source material, and my lack of reason for loving the first, I knew I had to see the second instalment on opening night. Which is exactly what I did! I’m glad I did because Dune: Part Two is categorically better than the first! Read on for my full review, potential mild spoilers with a dose of chaos! Enjoy!   Dune: Part Two picks us where the previous finished, Denis Villeneuve giving us one  continuous story, no flashbacks or memory trickers included. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem are joined by Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, Christopher Walken and Anya Taylor-Joy, the perfect all-star cast. The films stands at the 2h 45m mark, ye

10 Things I Want To See In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

If you've been reading my blog from the very start you will know that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the movie that inspired me create Just Another Film Blog. If you want to check that post out just click here! I am so excited for Star Wars episode 9!! We have a name! Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is crazy and I am not sure what to make off it! And we have a trailer that ends with a Palpatine laugh! I cannot tell you how excited I am right now. So I have decided to write down what I would like to see in Star Wars Episode 9.  I feel like there are so many possibilities for episode 9 and since watching Last Jedi I have been thinking about what I would like to see in the final instalment of the sequel trilogy. So read on to see what I would like to happen/see in the next Star Wars film. There will be possible spoilers from the previous films.

1) A Time Jump
Star Wars films normally have a pretty big time gap between the first and second instalments. In the Prequel Trilogy there is a 10 year time gap between The Phantom Menace and The Clone Wars and in the Original Trilogy there is a 3 year gap between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Whereas the gap between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi  is only a week max. I feel like a time gap gives the characters time to grow off screen, which I think helps the narrative. Also I think that a time gap means that we as viewers get to watch a movie trilogy that has taken place over several years rather than a matter of weeks which develops a more immersive experience. So I think it would be a good idea for there to be a significant time gap between The Last Jedi and episode 9, especially as Ray has the Jedi Texts to learn from and the Rebels and the New Order both need time to regroup and gain strength.

2) Rey's Parentage Will Be Revealed/Rey is a clone
The Last Jedi went out of its way to say that Ray had no parents (The mirror scene) and then Kylo tells Rey that her parents were normal people that sold her. I don't know if I am the only one confused by Rey's parentage but at this point I just want episode 9 to clarify. I may be one of the only people that still thinks Rey could be Luke's daughter, however I also think it would be cool if she was born of the force like Anakin. There is also the possibility that Rey is a clone, perhaps she is the clone of Luke/Anakin and perhaps there is more than one Rey which would explain the scene in The Last Jedi and dark Rey in the second trailer!
3) More Connections To The Prequel Trilogy
I've never hid the fact that I like the Prequel Trilogy, I grew up with them and I think they have some great moments, costumes, sets and emotional connections. And as much as people like to hate on them and as much as people say Last Jedi tried to distance itself from the prequels, Last Jedi actually copied scenes and referenced the prequels all the time (Click here to see my review for more). So I would love Episode 9 to have a major connection the prequels. I think that it is important for this film to stand up and say 'we don't hate the prequels' because at the end of the day there are people like me that enjoy them and I don't think it should be 'cool' to hate on them. So any positive reference, such as a place (I would love to see Naboo again) or a character or plot line would be great.
4) The Knights of Ren
I think it's about time we actually get to see the Knights of Ren. The Force Awakens teased them and The Last Jedi ignored them. I think it would be great see them in Episode 9, maybe they are now Kylo's red guard? Maybe Luke's wife is one? The Knights of Ren are hopefully the other Jedi's that Luke was training so it seems ridiculous that we have not been properly introduced to them yet. I cannot wait to see them eventually - I just hope they live up to the hype.

5) Flashback - or Vision
I really liked the Vision/Flashback in The Force Awakens, I thought it added a sense of mystery and destiny to the film. The sequel trilogy seems to be looking at the mistakes and triumphs of the Jedi and Sith in the past so it would be cool to maybe throw it back and have a vision of things that have happened. I think a flashback/vision can be a great narrative device that could add another layer to Star Wars Episode 9. Plus the second trailer certainly hints at this.

6) A Few More Swipes
Star Wars movies are known for their swipe cuts and alternative edits. This visual style is a defining feature of the films. I feel like there was not nearly enough Swipes in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi so I would like to see Star Wars go back to its editing roots in episode 9
7) More C3PO and R2D2
C3PO and R2D2 are the only two characters that have been in all 8 Star Wars films and if I am being honest they both deserve so much more screen time. I know we have BB-8 and he is adorable but C3PO and R2D2 have seen it all and have been there from the very start. It would be great to see C3PO get his memories back, and I have to know why he has red eyes in the trailer - do we think he could be a hidden spy? I do think it would be great to see more of the pair in episode 9.

8) More Focus on The Main Characters
I don't want this post to be a 'I hated Last Jedi' post because I didn't but I feel like Last Jedi wasted unnecessary time on a large amount of new secondary characters and pointless subplots. So I would like to see the main characters such as Rey, Poe, Finn and Kylo in a more central position in episode 9. I think that because Last Jedi was so stuffed with new characters and side plots the opportunity for character and story growth and development was lacking. I hope that episode 9 can rectify the issue by slim lining the narrative and reducing amount of side characters. Episode 9's central storyline should be between Rey and Kylo rather than a mish mash of everyone.

9) Force Jumps
One thing I really love from the Prequels is the crazy Lightsaber fights with the force jumps. So I would like to see some more of that in episode 9. I am not saying I want loads of force jumps and crazy lightsaber fights every five minutes but one big fight with a few force jumps would be perfect and possible considering how awesome CGI and stunts are now.
10) Better Costumes
I feel like there's not yet been an iconic costume in the sequel trilogy. If you look at the original trilogy there are so many iconic costumes such as the Jedi robes, Leia's white dress and side buns and whole Hans look. And the prequel trilogy really outdid themselves in the costume department, Padme is a style QUEEN. Why have a space opera if the costumes aren't completely crazy and stunning? Plus great costumes totally add to the overall production value. So episode 9 better have some great costumes.

So that's what I would really like to see in Star Wars Episode 9. There are some other things I would also like to see, such as some mention of Obi-wan, I'd like to see the boy from the end of Last Jedi and I want Kylo to go full on bad guy. I also really wanted Snoke to be Darth Plagueis, but Last Jedi ruined that one. Please let me know what you think of my list in the comments below.

Thank you for reading and may the force be with you xx
